Hiking the ‘Stans

STORY BY Patrick 21st March 2019

Uzbekistan has become more accessible this year with visa-free travel for 30 days introduced since February and small group and self-guided trekking experts, Walks Worldwide, has expanded its programme in the hotly-tipped ’Stans by adding a brand new, 14-day walking and cultural tour of the country.

The brand new ‘Natural Wonders of Uzbekistan’ tour covers mountainous regions, desert and ancient cities unearthing the country’s natural, cultural and historical secrets.   Visit three of the Silk Road’s most important cities – Tashkent, Khiva and Samarkand – and learn how to cook traditional Uzbek cuisine and eat dinner under the stars. Travelling through the country by bus, plane and train, discover arid deserts, alpine-esque lakes and vivid green mountain villages each day. Stay in local homestays and in a desert yurt for a full immersion in local traditions and culture.

The walking encompasses everything from mountains with incredible rock drawings to lakes and desert landscapes of red sands.   Trek through stunning locations such as Gulkamsay Gorge, following a ropeway with the help of a local mountain guide.  Stories of the country’s mesmerising history are told in the architecture of Soviet-era buildings, classical Russian architecture and restored 12th-century mosques.

Departing 22 May, 21 August and 11 September 2019, 13 nights’ half board costs from £1,799 per person based on 2 sharing, including return international flights from UK to Tashkent, 8 lunches, airport and luggage transfers, guiding, all transport and entrance fees.

The new small guided-group adventure compliments the operator’s existing 14-day trek in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, which started to become popular with adventurous travellers last year.
