Northern Lights Hunting on Horseback

STORY BY Patrick 27th June 2019

Witnessing the Northern Lights is a bucket-list experience: the skies above, emblazoned with the dance of the ethereal natural spectacle, imbue awe and wonder in anyone lucky enough to see them. Now, there is an even more magical way to search for the Lights – on horseback with the UK’s original Northern Lights holiday company, The Aurora Zone.

Available to beginners as well as more experienced riders, this new experience in northern Finland’s pristine wilderness of Torassieppi provides a back-to-nature way to hunt for the Aurora Borealis, perfect for exploring Lapland’s autumnal forests.

Saddle up at dusk to head deeper into the wilds, close to the borders of Pallas Ylläs National Park, keeping eyes trained on the heavens for a glimpse of the Lights, as your trusty steed makes his progress. The horseback adventure culminates at a special lakeside glamping location at which you’ll spend the night in an Aurora Dome, complete with a large north-facing window providing a clear view of the Arctic sky, whilst you stay cosy, tucked up in bed.

The new itinerary also delivers many other ways to explore the beautiful natural landscape in the season of Ruska, when the fall colours of the forest are reflected in the lake by day and the flicking Northern Lights are magnified by night. Take a husky hike, exploring the stunning surroundings in the company of these eager and excitable dogs, and visit an Aurora Camp for a further chance to witness Mother Nature’s mesmerising display. Discover the autumnal colours, too, on a foodie foraging experience, where you’ll find an array of edible seasonal berries and fungi growing in abundance.

Torassieppi: Autumn Auroras and Glamping in Lapland is a three-night trip priced from £965 pp (two sharing), including flights (London), all meals, transfers, two nights’ winter cottage accommodation, one night’s glamping in an Aurora Dome, activities as listed and the services of expert guides. Departures from 22 August to 22 September.
