Summer Is Served

Driving up to Bourg St Maurice the temperature hits 15°. The last snowflakes cling in piles by the road like penguins battling a storm. Recently carved spring snow now quietly seeps away, soon to become the white water of our summer rafting dreams.

We were in Bourg to meet Nick Casey, Head Chef of barnstorming Alpine food delivery startup, Huski. Nick, like those penguins, had been thinking of summer for a while now too. For while his colleagues had spent the winter delivering hearty meals to skiers all over the alps, Nick has been in the kitchen designing Huski’s first ever Summer Menu.

“For the last 3 years it’s been all about ski – big hearty meals, scandalous desserts and plenty of wine – but we felt it was time to double-down on summer.”

These days Summer in the Alps is big news. Every year more people are discovering how much fun you can have in the mountains without the over-crowding or inflated prices of the beach. Ski resorts that once went into hibernation are now buzzing all summer.

“Oddly it was the summer that brought me here in the first place,” says Nick. “I love skiing but what I really loved was the freedom I felt – on my bike, hiking, or paddling up a river in the summer. So I was super excited to come up with a range of dishes and menus that would fuel my adventures – from rewarding picnics to delicious sundown dinners. The summer vibe is clearly different. People are doing loads more stuff, they are a bit healthier, and the whole feeling is just lighter and more chilled. I have tried to build that same vibe into our range.”

So if you are in the Alps this summer, skip the supermarket and have Huski deliver one of Nick’s creations. For the day pack, how about baguettes with salmon pâté, quiche, sausage rolls and a sticky ginger loaf? Or a hassle-free dinner of tartiflette with salad and some local charcuterie? He’ll even take care of the cold beers.
