Surf, Ski or Board, Bike And Run In One Day

STORY BY Patrick 22nd January 2017

Up for a challenge but can’t decide between a winter and a summer holiday? Why not do both on the same trip this spring?

Chill by the beach in California for a few days and work on your balance on a surfboard before heading up to Mammoth Mountain to hit the ski slopes that are still open to late spring with the snow lying more than 10 feet deep.

You can even snowboard in the morning then hit the waves and surf on a board in the late afternoon if you plan it right.

Real fitness junkies can also opt to test their endurance and complete the ‘Sierra Trifecta’ at Mammoth  whilst taking in the stunning surroundings.  This is essentially to ski, bike and run in one day.

For good skiers a favourite start is to head down from Cornice Bowl to Gremlin’s Gulch, a steep black diamond run that is regularly groomed and when the snow softens up it is fun for fast turns. Once at the bottom, roll over into the Gremlin’s Gulch—a natural half-pipe like gully that heads toward Chair 23.

On to your bike and the Knolls Loop is a multi-use trail that is a favourite for its close proximity to the town of Mammoth Lakes and one of the first areas to be free of snow in the spring. A combination of single track, sandy off-highway-vehicle trails, and fire roads, the route meanders through Jeffrey pine forests and over rolling hills.

Finally the Sherwin Meadow – Enchanted Forrest Loop is the favourite trail run in town. The route combines dirt roads and single track trails for a moderate loop with minimal climbing.
