The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras returns in 2019 for the 40th anniversary of the festival, with a programme that marches confidently into the future.
Running for two weeks from Friday 15 February, the event is jam-packed with an exciting schedule of local and international queer performances, dance parties, theatre, music, workshops, exhibitions and over 100 community events under one roof. The Festival culminates with the iconic Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday 2 March, 2019.
Highlights across the festival include the phenomenal circus cabaret Club Briefs, the inaugural Bent Burlesque featuring the stars of Vienna Burlesque Festival, the all new Doggywood dog pageant, and the Sports Village where Team Sydney takes over with games of Volleyball, Tug of War and a Speedos Fashion Parade as well as many more LGBTQI artists from around the world.
2019’s Mardi Gras programme is bigger, better and more diverse than ever in its representation of the LGBTQI community. This year’s theme is ‘Fearless’, a poignant acknowledgement of the way LGBTQI people across the globe courageously express who they are, whilst also honouring past advocates, activists and individuals who have defended the community. Fearless is also a call to action for the future, calling on the LGBTQI community to be strong, brave, loud and proud and unite at Mardi Gras 2019 to celebrate as one.
