Teaching Biking Young

STORY BY Patrick 18th June 2017

Tredethick Farm Cottages, in Cornwall, are creating a purpose-built balance track, perfect for early bikers to develop their bike handling skills from age 18 months and up in a beautiful setting overlooking the Fowey valley.

The track, which will be approved by Strider balance bikes, has a rural theme and will use   local materials including granite, antique farm machinery and logs grown in the farm’s woodlands.

It’s being designed and tailored to capture the imagination of tiny tots from 18 months to five years and is believed to be the first in the southwest of England that is connected to farm holiday cottages.

The traffic-free track is perfect for riding on balance bikes, scooters, mini tractors and normal bikes and will feature a Tredethick granite ‘Tor’, a mini ford (make sure riders have their wellies on!), farmer’s fields to look at, a wooden barn to drive-through and don’t forget to fill-up at the fuel station half way round.

It also offers riders the traffic-free opportunity to take that formative step of peddling, stabiliser-free for the first time.

Tredethick offers free use of balance bikes, John Deere tractors and scooters for guests to play on throughout their stay.  Tredethick will offer use of Strider balance bikes (one of the leading brands in tot balance biking) .

The track is due to open in August 2017. As a boutique complex of eight stone cottages, the track gives families space and privacy to explore bike riding.

There will also be seating for parents and grandparents to watch their intrepid mini bikers, while enjoying the stunning views of the Fowey Valley.

“Mini farmers riding around the farm on our John Deere kids’ tractors are already a fantastic sight, and we wanted to take this up a gear and invite our guests on a real adventure,” said Ashlyn Reed, owner of Tredethick Farm Cottages. “The bike trail will be a wonderful addition to all the fun activities that we already have on the farm and we’re looking forward to adapting and growing it organically over the coming years.”

Located in Lostwithiel, in Cornwall, Tredethick Farm Cottages is also close to the Lanhydrock cycle hub and the Camel trail, which are perfect for children from five years onwards to improve their biking skills.
