World’s Most Successful Cyclist, Eddy Merckx, Celebrated In Austria

STORY BY Patrick 7th June 2019

A cycling marathon race staged in honour of the all-time great rider, the Belgian racer Eddy Merckx, is taking place in Austria on 8 September.

Merckx, the most successful cyclist of all time, has a special love for the Austrian region of SalzburgerLand and the province returns the sentiment with the Eddy Merckx Classic, now a key fixture in the cycling marathon calendar, attracting more than 1,500 participants from all over Europe to the end-of-season race.

Édouard Louis Joseph Baron or “Eddy” Merckx was famous for his almost brutal race dedication, dominating cycling in the 1960s and 70s like nobody before or since. Gaining world fame with his nickname “Cannibal”, he is still the most successful cyclist of all time, winning five times in two of the most important cycling races, the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, a feat unequalled to date. The year 2019 is a special anniversary for the marathon as it marks 50 years since Eddie’s victory at the Giro d’Italia
