Hike The Sellaronda

STORY BY Patrick 21st March 2024

The Sellaronda is one of the most famous ski circuits in the world. A network of pistes and lifts surrounding the spectacular Sella Massif in the stunning Italian dolomite mountains, a UNESCO World heritage site, the circuit also forms the hub of one of the world’s largest ski regions with world-famous ski resorts including Val Gardena radiating off to create over 500-km of linked slopes.

Now though, thanks to the Sellaronda HIKE Tour, guests can explore the unique landscape of the four Ladin valleys and three Italian provinces encompassing the Sella massif on foot!

The itinerary is as green as it comes, mixing hiking and the sustainable lift facilities to explore the area. It’s important to not though that his is a rather demanding excursion and requires excellent physical preparation. After all, you’ll have to face a 750 m elevation gain and a whooping 1,900 m elevation drop and over 25 km (16 miles) of hiking (44 km including the lifts facilities). A steady pace is also required, as the entire excursions lasts between 7 and 9 hours.

“We don’t recommend this excursion for families with children,” a Val Gardena spokesperson said.

The route is just part of a vast 600 km network of cared for and signposted hiking trails accessed from Val Gardena. 8 lift facilities ensure easy ascents (and descents) to countless, interesting locations.

Another highlight is the 4-day “Curona de Gherdëina” trek, a circuit of the Val Gardena summits. The 60-km excursion features numerous elevation gains and winds its way across the Puez-Odle Nature Park in the northeast (UNESCO Heritage Site), the Sella plateau in the southeast, and the valley of the Sassolungo Group in the south.

Hikers can receive bronze, silver, gold or crystal certificates for their efforts too … everyone will be rewarded by hiking across Val Gardena’s mountains. The traditional paper certificate also has a digital counterpart. All you have to do is download the app and start collecting points at lodges and huts. Once you’ve reached all the designated locations, you can download a certificate or pick up the “Odla d’Or” printed certificate at one of Val Gardena’s Tourism Bureaus.
