Hiking on the Sunny Side

STORY BY Patrick 14th March 2024

The Stubai, in Austria’s Tirol region, has had a very snowy ski season, with over a metre of snow falling on its glacier in one day in early March, and plans to keep its ski lifts running until late May.

But it is gearing up for summer too and this year has created a new 7.5km long trail which is the first on the sunny slopes of the Stubaital Valley, running between the villages of Fulpmes and Neustift.

The new Sunnenseite’n trail incorporates a suspension bridge of over one hundred metres in length which forms the trail’s highlight, offering views of Neustift and the head of the valley with the Stubai Glacier.

The trail leads from the middle station of the Schlick2000 Hiking Centre in Fulpmes along a new forest path to Kartnall Guesthouse in Neustift.

Despite all that snow above, thanks to its sunny location at medium altitude, the Sunnenseite’n Weg is accessible almost all year round.

The Stubai is located close to Innsbruck, easy to reach by road, rail or air from  the UK.
