Ride on the Roof of a Cable Car

STORY BY Patrick 4th May 2024

Zermatt is to become the latest mountain resort to offer summer visitors the chance to ascend standing on a ‘balcony’ on top of a cable car cabin, rather than within it.

From the 2024 summer season, the ‘Rooftop Ride’ will be available on the resort’s new cable car between Zermatt and Furi, which has been in operation since last November.

The new lift’s cabins, with their modern design, float over the end of the village of Zermatt and pass the specially designed support number one, which, depending on the angle, focuses on the Matterhorn like a magnifying glass.

This summer guests can enjoy the unrestricted view of the Matterhorn from the balcony, which is mounted on the roof of the cabin, with the fresh wind in their face.

“This unforgettable experience can be booked for a small surcharge from the 2024 summer season in our shop during the operating hours of the Zermatt – Furi aerial tramway. The cabin interior also offers a fantastic view and the large window fronts ensure a comfortable ride,” a resort spokesperson said.

Zermatt joins the Dachstein glacier in Austria, Snowbird in Utah, USA and Tignes in France in offering outdoor summer ascents on their cable cars.
