E-Biking in SalzburgerLand’s Majestic Mountains

STORY BY Debbie 2nd June 2025

When the alpine air sharpens and summer settles over SalzburgerLand, something curious happens on the mountain trails. Riders, with barely a sheen of sweat and wearing looks of serene satisfaction, glide past steep switchbacks and high meadows that once belonged only to the fittest and fiercest cyclists. They’re not cheating. They’re e-biking—and in the mountains of Austria, this isn’t just a trend. It’s a quietly thrilling revolution.

SalzburgerLand, with its snow-capped peaks and storybook valleys, has emerged as a European leader in electric mountain biking. It’s a region where tradition rubs shoulders with technology—where cows still wear bells, and charging stations stand beside alpine huts.

A Ride Fit for a König

If there’s a crown jewel in this electric uprising, it’s Hochkönig. This jagged monarch of a mountain region offers more than postcard panoramas—it’s home to what’s proudly touted as the world’s first e-bike region. With over two dozen dedicated trails and a fully integrated charging network that snakes from valley towns to peaks at nearly 2,000 meters, it’s engineered for endless exploration.

Start in Maria Alm, grab a rental from one of the many local providers (more than 30 across the region), and you’re off on the Flow Trail—a route that lives up to its name with curving descents and scenic pit stops. And when your battery dips low? Just plug in at a mountainside hut while you sip an elderflower spritz or bite into a slice of Apfelstrudel.

The Saalach Valley: Where Serenity Meets the Saddle

Eastward lies the Saalach Valley, quieter and less showy but no less seductive. Here, e-bikes have become part of the local rhythm—woven into daily life and leisure. Nearly 100 rental options and 24 charging points dot the landscape, making it easy to ride as far as your curiosity takes you.

Trails wind along riverbanks, through wildflower-dusted meadows, and into shaded pine forests. It’s a ride that doesn’t rush you—made for spontaneous detours to a lakeside tavern or a family-run cheese hut where the only menu is what the goats gave that morning.

Tennengau: With a Touch of Fame

Over in Tennengau, past Hallein and the hauntingly beautiful salt mines of Dürrnberg, you’ll find trails with both pedigree and panache. This is Marcel Hirscher territory—the skiing legend grew up here—and it shows in the confident way paths loop around alpine ridges and descend into valleys stitched with hayfields.

Loseggalm is the star ride: a route that captures the theatrical views of the Gosaukamm mountains and threads through fragrant forests. It’s the kind of place you half expect a film crew to emerge from the mist.

Wagrain-Kleinarl: All-Inclusive Adventure

For those dipping their toes into e-biking, Wagrain-Kleinarl offers something rare: full-package experiences. Twice a week, guided tours take riders of all levels up to alpine lakes or secluded huts. Everything is sorted—from helmets to hearty lunches—so all you have to do is pedal and marvel.

This is where technology meets hospitality. The guides are locals, quick with stories and shortcuts, and you’re as likely to learn about the best Kaiserschmarrn in town as you are to spot a chamois mid-climb.

The Tauern Cycle Trail: A River Runs Through It

Not all great rides have to climb. The Tauern Cycle Trail is a ribbon of joy that unfurls alongside the Salzach and Saalach rivers, stretching through some of SalzburgerLand’s gentlest and greenest terrain.

Here, the e-bike becomes your passport to slow travel. Stop at organic farms selling fresh berries. Stroll through towns where every fountain has a history. And plug in your wheels at any of the many compatible stations—often beside a bakery or a brewery.

Sportwelt and Saalbach: Big Miles, Bigger Smiles

If your idea of a holiday includes a bit of a burn, Salzburger Sportwelt and Saalbach Hinterglemm deliver the goods. Together they offer over 40 mapped tours that range from easy-going to epic.

In Saalbach, pedal-assist bikes are standard fare, with routes pushing up 2,000 meters and rewarding every drop of sweat (or battery juice) with spellbinding views. Think: pine-framed peaks, marmots on the move, and silence so deep it resets your inner clock.

Seenland: For When You Need a Breather

And finally, for those who want their riding laced with lakeside leisure, there’s the Salzburger Seenland. This cluster of glassy lakes—Mattsee, Obertrumer See, and Wallersee—offers 600 km of rolling, well-signposted trails.

Here, your e-bike isn’t a machine; it’s a means to a mood. You drift from one swimming spot to another, pause for a grilled fish lunch at a boatyard café, and still have energy to cruise into golden-hour light.

Charge Up and Chill Out

E-biking in SalzburgerLand is more than a sport. It’s an ethos—a way of engaging with nature, people, and place without exhausting your body or throttling your soul. Whether you’re after adrenaline or calm, altitude or ease, this part of Austria offers a trail with your name on it.

And the best part? No one judges you for flipping the turbo switch. Up here, going electric is just smart mountain sense.
