Introducing OUTset – the Adventure Film Festival 2017

STORY BY admin 20th February 2017

The Adventure Film Festival is back as OUTset – coming to screens around the UK this March with 3 movies charting the birth and growth of mountain biking, big wall climbing and skateboarding from their humble origins in California to global phenomenon.

Visit California presents OUTset Film Festival, a series of ground breaking adventure documentary film screenings across the UK. These films chart how three adventure sports have grown from humble Californian roots into global cultural phenomenons.

The three showcase films are Dogtown and Z boys (2001), Klunkerz (2006) and Valley Uprising (2014).

Dogtown and Z boys (2001) follows the ‘Zephyr team’- a group of brash city kids in Venice Beach – who revolutionised skateboarding with a new improvised approach that shredded their competition. This bold, dynamic way of skateboarding marked the birth of the street style that we know and love today.

Klunkerz (2006) documents the lives of pioneering San Francisco Bay cyclists who salvaged cast-off junkyard bikes and scavenged motorcycle parts to create frames suitable for off-road cycling; a concept considered very dangerous at the time. These risk taking entrepreneurs were directly responsible for popularising this new sport and turning it into today’s billion dollar mountain biking industry.

Valley Uprising (2014) tells the story of Californian counterculture of the sixties and how this new wave of creative freedom fuelled big ambitions in sport. This revolutionary era of breaking conventions helped athletes change perceptions and redefine the limits of rock climbing in California’s legendary Yosemite National Park.
