As National Walking Month steps into focus this May, there’s no better time to lace up your boots and discover the Dolomites — and Hotel Hubertus in Olang, South Tyrol, makes an exceptional basecamp for doing exactly that. Nestled on the sun-drenched slopes of Plan de Corones, this luxury alpine retreat invites walkers of all abilities to explore some of Italy’s most breathtaking terrain, where jagged limestone peaks meet quiet valleys and crystal-clear lakes.

From May 15, Hotel Hubertus reopens with a reinvigorated Alpenreych Spa and a walking programme that’s as varied as the landscape itself. Guests can join over 15 guided hikes each week, from relaxed Nordic walking sessions to ambitious ascents like the Gsieser Almweg 2000 and dramatic routes through the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. Whether you’re looking for an accessible loop or a rewarding summit trek, the hotel has your alpine adventure covered.

1. Serenity Among the Peaks: Passo Furcia to Lake Hochalp
Altitude: 2,373 m | Time: ~4 hours | Difficulty: Moderate
Starting at the picturesque Passo Furcia, this trail rises steadily along panoramic ridges to the glistening Lake Hochalp. Along the way, meadows blossom beneath the drama of jagged Dolomite spires. A rest at the Lapeduresscharte saddle offers soul-stirring views before the return descent.
2. Whispering Forests to Brunstalm Pasture
Altitude: 1,898 m | Time: ~4 hours | Difficulty: Moderate
A peaceful path through spruce woods and alpine pasture starts in the village of Oberolang. You’ll climb 741 metres to reach the Brunstalm hut, rewarded with expansive views of Plan de Corones and the surrounding valleys. The descent along the Brunststeig path offers moments of unexpected beauty at every bend.
3. Around the Legendary Three Peaks
Altitude: 2,454 m | Time: ~3 hours | Difficulty: Hard
This iconic loop begins at Auronzo Hut and circumnavigates the famed Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Along the way, pass mountain huts and high saddles that frame one of the Dolomites’ most dramatic sights — the sheer north face of the Three Peaks towering above the trail.
For those seeking a slower pace, Hotel Hubertus also organises sociable excursions like sunrise or sunset walks, and trips to its private Chalet Hubertus — sometimes ending with a mountainside barbecue. And with over 275 km of trails accessible from the property, there’s something new to discover each day, no matter your pace or experience.
After a day on the trails, guests can unwind in the hotel’s standout Heaven & Hell Spa, or look forward to the newly refurbished Alpenreych Spa. Rooms and suites echo the surrounding landscape with warm alpine elegance, while the hotel’s kitchen blends traditional South Tyrolean and Mediterranean flavours in a ¾ board menu that covers breakfast, afternoon snacks, and indulgent dinners.
Rates: From €225 / approx. £193 per person per night (¾ board included)
Minimum Stay: 5 nights
