Pop-up campsite with ‘festival vibe’ returns

STORY BY Debbie 30th September 2023

Families looking for an idyllic and laid-back camping experience this summer can now book their pitches or tipis for a popular pop-up site with a ‘festival vibe’.

Wild Canvas Camping held its family-friendly pop-up campsite at the riverside meadows of the historic Turvey House Estate, Bedfordshire, for the first time last year after previously testing the concept in Somerset in 2020.

The event was a triumph, with organisers saying the safe, tranquil and unbelievably beautiful setting was the perfect location to provide an off-the-beaten track experience while still being centrally-located and easily accessible.

With the River Great Ouse running through the site for wild-swimming and paddling, plus a host of wellness offerings and family-friendly activities, both free of charge and paid for, there is plenty to keep guests entertained during their stay.

Stand-up paddle boarding, super hero fancy dress kids discos, arts and crafts workshops and a kids’ nature club will be taking place at various times during the summer. There will also be wellness classes over the weekends for both children and adults, that range from early morning Qigong meditations and cacao ceremonies to yoga and pilates.

The camping returns in 2022 with an opening weekend special from 29th July to August 1, before   resuming the summer season from 5th to 30th of August. The boutique campsite, which has a ‘no car’ policy on the camping fields, also maintains a central fire pit to give the camp a more ‘communal’ spirit.

Hot and cold food and drink is available all day from the onsite cafe. Guests can also enjoy drinks at the festival style bar, with a wide range of beers, wines and with signature cocktails at weekends, and pick up basic supplies from the campsite shop.

Although Wild Canvas will provide the background soundtrack throughout and a roster of live DJs will also perform over the weekends, organisers are keen to emphasise that this isn’t principally a festival – rather a family-friendly camping experience with a ‘festival vibe’. DJs for 2022 include Mad Professor, Earl Gateshead, Mucho Soul, Stuart Patterson and more.

Founder Serkan Cetin said: “Last year we had the most amazing summer in this stunning location and we just knew we had to return again this year.

“The response from families was phenomenal and they told us they loved the chance to chat to like-minded people around the fire pit in the evenings, enjoying a drink as the sun sets.

“Whether you want to stay three days or a fortnight, the setting encapsulates everything Wild Canvas is about: barefoot luxury with a laid-back vibe, getting out in the fresh air, enjoying music whilst hanging out with friends and family in the great outdoors.”

There are several accommodation options to choose from, with prices starting from £26 for adults and £8 for children. There’s an early booking discount if you book before 1st April, 2022. Guests can choose to stay in beautiful traditional furnished Tipis, handmade in Glastonbury, modern tipi-style Tri-Lodge tents, or bring their own tents (BYOT) or campervans on grassy, flat and generously spaced pitches. And new for this year is the Tipi Village – a private area offering the perfect place for groups and families to reconnect with each other and nature. Hot water, private cubicle showers, both flushing and portable toilets are also on-site.

While there is lots to do on-site, nearby attractions include Woburn Safari Park, Whipsnade Zoo and Dunstable Downs within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. And a whole host of activities are within half an hour’s drive, including climbing, indoor karting, an inflatable water park, Snozone snow activities, a dinosaur and farm park, as well as Bletchley Park.
