Rory McIlroy Heads Up Stellar Lineup For Crans-Montana European Masters Golf Tournament

STORY BY Megan Hughes 22nd August 2019

Celebrating 80 years at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club this year, the Omega European Masters looks set to be an epic event, with a star-studded lineup headed up by none other than Rory McIlroy.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a record number of tickets have been sold for the tournament, which takes place from 29th August to 1st September 2019 in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana.

Thanks to a change in the US PGA Tour schedule, many stars from the world of golf have been able to confirm their attendance at the tournament.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who held the no 1 status in the world for 95 weeks and is the holder of 4 majors heads the list of famous faces. Alongside him, Sergio Garcia, Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Danny Willett, Bernd Wiesberger, Matt Wallace, Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Alex Noren (alongside a host of others), will compete for the famous ‘red jacket’ and the Omega European Masters trophy.

First played in 1939, the Omega European Masters is the oldest golf tournament of its type in Europe. Since then, it has evolved significantly to become one of the most prestigious and appreciated tournaments on the European Tour.

A tournament of tradition, the Omega European Masters is held on the same course each year, though of course, the course has experienced some changes during the past few years. The tees, fairways, irrigation, drainage and 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th greens have been adapted for the modern game, now offering high quality Par 3s and 5s. Investment has reached approximately 4 million Swiss Francs for these improvements.

Not only will visitors be able to view some of the world’s best golfing talent, but they will also be able to enjoy a number of additional events alongside the competition. On Saturday 31st August, there will be a ‘Beat the Pro’ competition in partnership with the foundation ‘Supporting Golf Together’ created and financed by Swiss Golf, ASGI and Migros Golf Card. This will feature the best Swiss junior golfers doing battle with the pros on the 8th hole during the tournament.

Four professional golfers will also compete using old fashioned clothes and clubs in a Hickory Challenge which will take place on holes 10 and 18 after the official day’s competition. Finally, Credit-Suisse will be donating CHF 200 for every birdie at the 8th throughout the week in aid of the charity ‘Swiss School for Guide Dogs’.

The 2019 Omega European Masters promises to be an exceptional event, from the level and quality of the players to the equally renowned celebrities from the world of sport and show business who will play the Credit Suisse Gold Pro-Am.
