If you’re planning a summer holiday in the mountains and craving fresh alpine air, breathtaking views, and exceptional food, look no further than the 3 Zinnen Dolomites in South Tyrol, northern Italy. Located just a few hours from Innsbruck or Venice, this hidden gem in the Italian Dolomites is one of the most spectacular yet under-the-radar destinations in Europe.
Nestled in the northeastern corner of Italy near the Austrian border, the 3 Zinnen Dolomites region is a visual masterpiece. Picture dramatic limestone peaks, sun-kissed alpine meadows, and charming South Tyrolean villages where tradition meets nature. At the heart of it all are the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the iconic “three peaks” that define this UNESCO World Heritage Site—a must-visit for anyone seeking an unforgettable summer escape in the Dolomites.
This place is a playground for hikers, climbers, cyclists, and families who just want to run wild in beautiful nature. Over 400km of trails wind through valleys, forests, and peaks, with five cable cars making light work of the climbs. Whether you’re chasing the sunrise on Monte Elmo with breakfast at a mountain hut, gliding down forested singletrack on an e-bike tour, or strolling around the tranquil shores of Lago di Dobbiaco, every day promises a new adventure.

And if you’re travelling with kids, you’re in for a treat. New for this year is Rocky Spirits, a brilliant new family adventure trail at Croda Rossa. It’s a gentle 2.5 km circuit filled with interactive stations, local legends, and nature discovery—perfect for curious minds (and legs that need to stretch).

3 Zinnen isn’t just about nature. Culture pulses through its mountain villages, from summer concerts and guided historical hikes to a very exciting new addition: the Reinhold Messner Haus, opening this summer at Monte Elmo. Housed in a converted cable car station at 2,050m, this space—created by one of the most legendary alpinists of all time—will host talks, readings, and exhibitions about mountains, mindfulness, and sustainable tourism. Expect big views and even bigger ideas.

And speaking of taste, don’t leave without indulging in the region’s Alpine-meets-Italian cuisine. One of the highlights of the year is the Dolomiti Gourmet Festival (3–5 October), now in its 12th year. Michelin-starred chefs from across Europe come to South Tyrol to create unforgettable dishes using local ingredients—think mountaintop tastings, food safaris, and vino in the valley.

One of the region’s biggest luxuries? Space. You won’t be jostling for elbow room like at the Amalfi Coast or Lake Como. Here, you can picnic beside glassy-blue Lago di Braies, sip pine schnapps in a peaceful rifugio, or watch the clouds drift over the Zinnenseen, three little alpine lakes tucked beneath the towering Tre Cime.
From spa hotels and family-run pensions to cable car picnics and hut-to-hut hikes, the 3 Zinnen Dolomites offer something rare these days: an unspoiled slice of the Alps that still feels authentic. Whether you’re in it for adrenaline, culture, cuisine—or just a proper break—you’ll leave with lungs full of mountain air and a camera full of ‘wow.’
