Alpine Summer 2026: Swap The Med For The Mountains

STORY BY Debbie 2nd July 2026

With much of Europe facing more frequent summer heatwaves, the appeal of a mountain holiday in July and August is becoming increasingly obvious. For many UK travellers, the traditional beach break is no longer quite the easy choice it once was, particularly when temperatures around the Mediterranean climb into the high 30s and sightseeing, walking or even sleeping comfortably can start to feel like hard work.

That helps explain why the phrase “alpine summer” is gaining traction. According to Google Trends data supplied by mountain holiday specialist Heidi, UK search interest for “alpine summer” is up 82% year-on-year, while the European Travel Commission’s latest spring/summer 2026 report found that pleasant, stable weather is now the second most important factor for travellers choosing a destination, behind only safety.

For skiers, of course, the idea is not so strange. We already know the value of altitude. In winter it helps preserve snow; in summer it brings cooler air, walking trails, lakes, lifts, mountain huts and a more active kind of holiday than a week spent hiding from the midday sun.

Heidi is responding to that shift by doubling its summer walking programme to 46 resorts across France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Poland and Andorra. The company has also added Andorra and Switzerland for the first time, along with five new Dolomites destinations: Cortina d’Ampezzo, Kronplatz, Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Madonna di Campiglio.

Marcus Blunt, Co-Founder of Heidi, says: “High-altitude mountain resorts still get summer sunshine but run cooler than the Med’s beach hotspots, offering a refreshing escape. You can walk, hike, swim and explore without the oppressive heat. Our self-guided walking holidays are flexible, faff-free and perfect for recharging in the mountains.”

The result is a compelling case for what is sometimes called a “coolcation”, although most mountain regulars would probably just call it a sensible summer in the Alps.

Three Cooler Summer Swaps

Swap Spain’s Costa del Sol for Arinsal, Andorra

The Costa del Sol will always have its place, but when southern Spain is pushing through 30°C+ summer highs, Arinsal makes a persuasive alternative. Set at 1550m in the Pyrenees, the Andorran village offers cooler mountain air, access to Comapedrosa Nature Park and a relaxed summer rhythm built around walking, scenery and good-value stays.

Heidi has 7 nights at Hotel Princesa Parc Excellence from £878pp, including return London Stansted to Barcelona flights and private transfers, departing 15 August 2026.

Swap the Amalfi Coast for Selva di Val Gardena, Italy

The Amalfi Coast remains one of Europe’s great summer draws, but it can be hot, crowded and expensive in peak season. Selva di Val Gardena, at 1563m in the Dolomites, offers a very different Italian summer: mountain walks, lift-accessed viewpoints, Ladin food, flower-filled meadows and temperatures typically far more comfortable for active days outdoors.

Heidi has 4 nights B&B at Hotel Acadia from £1,149pp, including return London Stansted to Venice flights, private transfers and a free Val Gardena summer card, departing 30 July 2026.

Swap Vasiliki, Greece, for Pertisau, Austria

Travellers who like watersports do not have to head for the Greek islands to find them. Pertisau, on Lake Achensee in Austria, offers sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, but with Alpine views and summer temperatures generally in the low-to-mid 20s rather than the 30°C+ heat often found in Greece.

Heidi has 5 nights B&B at Hotel Auszeit from £994pp, including return London Gatwick to Munich flights, transfers and a free summer AchenseeCard, departing 18 August 2026.

The point is not that beach holidays are finished, but for anyone who has spent recent summers dodging the worst of the afternoon heat, searching for shade or abandoning plans because it is simply too hot to move, the mountains now offer a very convincing alternative.

An alpine summer brings the things many of us still want from Europe in July and August: sunshine, good food, swimming, scenery and time outdoors. The difference is that it comes with cooler nights, fresher mornings and the freedom to walk, explore and enjoy the day without feeling beaten by the heat.

That is why 2026 feels like a tipping point. From Andorra to the Dolomites and Austria’s great mountain lakes, the smart summer swap is no longer simply south. Increasingly, it is up.
