No Skis? No Problem! Idaho’s Ski Alternatives Have Your Winter Holiday Covered

STORY BY Megan Hughes 2nd February 2018

If skiing’s not your thing but you’re after a winter holiday this year, Idaho has a plentiful offering of alternative winter activities. Here are their top three tips for non-skiers, which are guaranteed to make a 2018 winter escape one to remember.

Sleigh Riding

Take a sleigh ride through Idaho’s enchanting and expansive wilderness, a true wonderland throughout the winter season. There’s a ride for everyone – couples can enjoy a romantic trip for two, complete with dinner and entertainment, or bring the whole family along for a shorter jaunt in this magical back-country. At Linn Canyon Ranch, you can grab a blanket, board the sleigh and trek through the Teton Range. If you’re lucky you’ll glimpse some of the local wildlife this majestic valley is home to.

Tubing

It’s not mandatory to ski down slopes – why don’t you try tubing instead? Requiring extremely minimal effort, but providing maximum thrills, whizz down Idaho’s icy slopes on a simple rubber tube. 20 miles from Boise is the Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area, offering families an exhilarating tubing experience. Jump on a tube and while away the afternoon zooming down the 800-foot run, and let the paddle tow conveniently pull you straight back to the top for your next ride.

Hot Springs

The coolest way to stay warm on your winter holiday. Idaho’s hot springs allow you to relax in a number of environments, on mountain paths or even under the stars. Lava Hot Springs offers five pools with temperatures ranging from 102°F to 112°F laden with minerals. All this is set against the resort’s backdrop of botanical wonder, open for the public to explore and free of charge.

Adjacent to Washington and Oregon in the Pacific Northwest, Idaho stretches from the top of Nevada and Utah to the Canadian border. It really is a natural playground and is the perfect place to make your winter wonderful with activities that reach far beyond the ski slopes.

While these activities are tailored to winter travellers, Idaho has a lot to offer all year round. It is an ideal destination for family travellers, outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers, or those just looking for a relaxing getaway. Whenever you choose to visit, you will find spectacular scenery and fun things to do in an unhurried, unspoiled and unassuming landscape. From forests to desert and rugged mountains to broad farmlands, Idaho offers unspoiled nature, white-water rafting, ranching experiences, Native American culture, biking, golf and wineries, spring through to fall.
